“Stop Changing Coaches” — Tshabalala Drops Truth Bomb On Chiefs Identity Crisis

Kaizer Chiefs legend Siphiwe Tshabalala warns that the club will trap themselves in a relentless cycle of changing managers if they appoint coaches who fail to align with the core values of the institution.

Amakhosi are once again hunting for a new tactician after parting ways with Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef at the conclusion of the season last week.

The duo had stepped into the hotseat in October after management sacked Nasreddine Nabi. Tasked with steadying the ship at Naturena until the end of the campaign, they ultimately guided Chiefs to a third-place finish, securing qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Despite the stable finish, management deemed further changes necessary. Chiefs are now heavily linked with a move for Fernando Cruz. The tactician is reportedly set to take the reins at Naturena, marking a dramatic return after he initially arrived alongside Nabi ahead of the 2024/25 season, only to leave abruptly for a post with the Moroccan Football Federation.

Reflecting on the club’s ongoing identity crisis, Tshabalala emphasized that long-term success requires organizational alignment rather than letting a coach reinvent the wheel.

“It has to be a buy-in from both sides,” Tshabalala said, during the Bafana Bafana send-off with Castle on Saturday.

“If there is alignment with the club, the coach can present his own philosophy and plans. But if he does not succeed, the club will replace him with another coach, and they won’t make progress in that regard.

“The club needs to say, ‘These are the values of the club, this is the philosophy of the club, and this is what we want you to work on.'”

While the campaign ended in another coaching shake-up, the team’s third-place finish yielded 54 points. This marked the first time the Glamour Boys hit the 50-point milestone since the heartbreaking 2019/20 season, where they lost the league title to Mamelodi Sundowns on the final matchday.

Tshabalala holds immortal status at Naturena, having made 372 appearances for the club (336 starts and 36 substitute cameos). “Shabba” netted 58 goals for Amakhosi, with his final strike coming via a beautifully executed free-kick during a 1-1 draw against Baroka FC on August 14, 2018.

The iconic playmaker also holds the coveted record for the most Soweto Derby appearances against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates since the inception of the PSL in 1996. He featured in 31 derbies, scoring four goals. His derby journey began on November 24, 2007, in a thrilling 2-2 draw at Kings Park Stadium in Durban, and concluded with his final derby appearance on March 3, 2018.

During his glittering tenure, Tshabalala lifted two league titles (2012/13, 2014/15), three Telkom Knockout trophies (2007, 2010, 2011), two MTN8 titles (2008, 2014), and one Nedbank Cup (2013). His excellence was recognized internally with three Kaizer Chiefs Player of the Season accolades (2008/09, 2011/12, and 2016/17).

Looking ahead to the upcoming campaign, Tshabalala noted that while intense pressure awaits the next appointment, the squad must take accountability to help the new manager succeed.

“Whoever comes in must understand that he is entering an environment packed with pressure and very little patience from the supporters. Because of that, the players have to step up every single week,” Tshabalala added.

“There has to be a collective buy-in from the players and the coach to grasp the club’s identity as quickly as possible. As I’ve said before, philosophy and identity must always come first.”
