Sundowns Confirms Player Departures

Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the departure of Bongani Zungu, Gaston Sirino, Brian Onyango, and Thabiso Kutumela.
While all four players didn’t meet the club’s expectations for consistent performance this past season, Bongani Zungu’s exit came as a significant surprise to many.
Despite starting the Nedbank Cup final loss against Orlando Pirates earlier this month, the former Bafana Bafana midfielder confirmed his departure from the African giants on his Instagram page a few weeks ago.
Sirino’s departure wasn’t unexpected. Coach Rulani Mokwena previously revealed that the Uruguayan international disrespected the club on several occasions, including requesting a transfer and even wearing an Al Ahly shirt. Despite this, Sirino did win seven league titles with Sundowns since joining them in the second half of the 2017/18 season.
Kutumela’s exit was foreshadowed by his loan spell at Cape Town City last season. He leaves Sundowns after four years, one spent on loan, having secured two league titles, the Nedbank Cup, and the MTN8.
Kenyan midfielder Brian Onyango departs after a successful period at Sundowns, having joined in the 2020/21 season. He leaves with a collection of trophies, including four league titles, the Nedbank Cup, the MTN8, and the African Champions League.

Junior Mendieta is also expected to leave Sundowns for a move to Turkey ahead of next season. Despite Sundowns signing him for a significant fee from Stellenbosch FC at the start of last season, he, like the other four players, struggled to meet coach Mokwena’s high performance standards and secure regular playing time.
