Vilakazi: We Want To Save The Status

Richards Bay coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi has revealed the inspiration for his side’s win was to save the team’s top-flight status.

Bay confirmed their promotion play-off spot for now following a 1-0 win over Soweto giants Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.

The win saw Bay relegate Cape Town Spurs back to the Motsepe Foundation Championship as they extended their unbeaten run in the league to three games with two clean sheets along the way.

Vilakazi made two changes to the side that drew 0-0 against Polokwane City in Limpopo with Thulani Gumede and Tercious Malepe making way for Sanele Barns and Romario Dlamini.

The Natal Rich Boys won the game through a solitary strike by Sanele Barns in the first half, the first time they have scored against Pirates and the third time to beat the Soweto giants at Orlando Stadium this season.

“We were bound and to be forced to improve,” said Vilakazi after the game on SuperSport TV.

“We want to save the team, so we have to dig deep to do our best and save the status.

“Obviously we never started the preseason together, but at least now the format is there and now the players know how to respond to what is needed from the technical staff.”

Following the win, Vilakazi’s charges have now moved eight points clear of the relegation zone and two points behind KZN rivals Royal AM, who have a game in hand after a 1-0 loss to champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the early kick-off.

Bay will now travel to Cape Town for a clash against a desperate Cape Town City side in their penultimate game of the season before a final home game against CAF Champions League-chasing Stellenbosch FC at the King Zwelithini Stadium for their final encounter of the season.
