Yaya’s Agent: We Offered Him To Chiefs But…

Sphephelo Sithole’s agent, Manuel Tomas, said he offered the player to Kaizer Chiefs but they were too slow in the process.

Sithole has subsequently signed with Gil Vicente, which was confirmed on Monday, reuniting with his former coach, Tozé Marreco, who previously managed him at Tondela.

The Bafana Bafana international has joined Gil Vicente on loan, with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season, depending on his performance. Sithole played 27 matches in all competitions for Tondela last season, contributing two goals and two assists.

“The move happened very quickly,” Tomas told Sportswire. “We were in talks with Kaizer Chiefs, but they didn’t submit an official proposal. We informed them of our urgency due to the upcoming pre-season and finalized the deal with Gil Vicente within hours.

“We couldn’t afford to wait, as Gil Vicente gave us just two hours to decide, while we anticipated a longer process with Chiefs. Unfortunately, in football, time is crucial.”

Sithole, who made his Bafana Bafana debut against 2022 FIFA World Cup semifinalists Morocco two years ago, was a standout performer for the team that won bronze at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast earlier this year. The 25-year-old played in all seven matches as Bafana Bafana secured their first third-place finish in 24 years. He also played the full 90 minutes in both the 1-1 draw against Nigeria and the 3-1 victory over Zimbabwe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.

“With this coach, Sithole will continue to play the same style of football as he does for the national team,” Tomas added.

When asked about the chances of the loan deal becoming permanent, Tomas expressed optimism: “The chances are high. However, we’ll take it day by day, as the club has the necessary conditions. While it’s not a major club, it’s the same team that sent Samuel Lino (the Brazilian) to Atletico Madrid (first loaned out to Valencia in the 2022/23 season).”
