Orlando Pirates Fined R100,000 For Fan Misconduct

Orlando Pirates have been fined R100,000 by the PSL Disciplinary Committee (DC) for fan misconduct during their Carling Knockout match against Magesi FC.

Pirates fans reacted angrily to a disallowed goal by Mohau Nkota, throwing missiles onto the pitch last month at Orlando Stadium when they thought they had found the equalizer to make it 3-3.

PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu confirmed the charges and the subsequent fine: “Orlando Pirates Football Club pleaded guilty and they charged, and they were subsequently convicted accordingly.

“Having listened to the submissions regarding aggravation and mitigation of sanction and mindful that they pleaded guilty and they appeared as the first offenders, the PSL DC ruled as follows: they were fined a monetary of the amount of R100,000 of which half (R50,000) is suspended for 12 months on condition that during that period of suspension, they are not found guilty of the same offence.

“If they were to re-offend, the suspended portion (R50,000) will be coming immediately effectively as well as the additional sanction of the new offence.

“They were further ordered to carry the cost of the DC proceedings, which are usually administratively computed and added to the R50,000 fine which is effective immediately.”

Pirates join Kaizer Chiefs as the second Soweto giant to face disciplinary action this season. Chiefs were fined R150,000 for fan misconduct during their match against Mamelodi Sundowns, where fans threw bottles onto the pitch and at referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa.
