Durban City Secures Betway Premiership Promotion Amid Player Eligibility Dispute

Durban City achieved Betway Premiership promotion after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Cape Town Spurs at Athlone Stadium in their final Motsepe Foundation Championship match on Sunday.
However, the Durban-based club’s celebrations are tempered by an ongoing dispute concerning the eligibility of midfielder Saziso Magawana, which is currently being handled by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Disciplinary Committee (DC).
Spurs lodged a protest before the game, arguing that Magawana is still contracted to Marumo Gallants. Gallants also claim that Magawana remains their player.
Consequently, the PSL issued a statement midweek announcing that there would be no trophy handover on Sunday due to pending DC cases.
Magawana joined City during the off-season as a free agent. Demonstrating their confidence in the legality of the transfer, City fielded Magawana in the crucial match in Cape Town.
City entered the game needing only a draw to secure their top-place finish and promotion to the Betway Premiership next season.
Spurs, on the other hand, needed a victory at all costs to maintain any hope of remaining in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Ultimately, they were relegated to the ABC Motsepe regional League.
Spurs were relegated from the top flight to the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the end of last season under coach Ernst Middendorp, who surprisingly remains in charge. Despite leaving at the end of the previous season, Middendorp and the club reached an agreement to renew his contract.
Recognizing their precarious situation, Spurs started strongly, and Luke Baartman’s eighth-minute strike rattled the crossbar, with City goalkeeper Ayanda Mtshali beaten.
City, who rebranded as Maritzburg United at the start of the season, weathered the early storm as Spurs’ initial intensity faded.
Just minutes before halftime, Spurs’ tall striker Angus Moss missed a golden opportunity to break the deadlock. His unmarked header inside the box was well saved by Mtshali, who punched the ball away to avert the danger.
However, against the run of play, Ruzaign Gamilden put City ahead with a header on the stroke of halftime, meeting Siyanda Hlangabeza’s cross. Gamilden leaped between Spurs defenders and headed the ball past Neil Boshoff in goal.
As that was the final action of the first half, a visibly frustrated Spurs coach Middendorp was the first to head into the tunnel.
The second half became a midfield battle, with clear-cut chances few and far between for either side.
City almost secured an insurance goal when Magawana’s dangerous free kick across the face of the goal needed only a touch from a teammate, but no one connected, and the ball went wide.
In the 77th minute, Khaya Mfecane nearly equalized for Spurs, side-footing a shot that struck the upright – the second time Spurs had hit the woodwork in the match.
Spurs increased the pressure, and Mtshali made a crucial save from Keenan Bezuidenhout’s header inside the box, claiming the ball just before it crossed the line, prompting jubilant celebrations from the goalkeeper.
City had a late opportunity to extend their lead, but Lindokuhle Chonco, through on goal, made a tired effort. Ultimately, City didn’t need the extra goal as they celebrated their promotion.
However, the league’s DC will adjudicate on the matter regarding Magawana’s eligibility to play this season during a sitting on Tuesday.
