Chiefs And Sundowns Settle For A Draw

In a highly anticipated Betway Premiership clash, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns battled to a goalless draw at FNB Stadium on Wednesday.

With Sundowns looking fatigued, Chiefs will view this as a missed opportunity to defeat a side that won three out of four matches against them last season, including both league fixtures. The highly anticipated match, which saw 75,000 tickets sold, was delayed by 15 minutes as fans were still entering the stadium.

Sundowns, the eight-time consecutive league champions, came into the game under pressure after being knocked out of the MTN8 semi-final by rivals Orlando Pirates over the weekend. Fans at the stadium made their dissatisfaction known towards coach Miguel Cardoso.

Chiefs welcomed back coach Nasreddine Nabi, who had missed the first three matches of the season to attend to his wife following a car accident in Tunisia.

First Half Action

Chiefs started the game brightly. An early header from Wandile Duba was comfortably saved by Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, and Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s long-range effort went wide. Sundowns had their own chance when Tashreeq Matthews capitalized on a defensive error, but his shot also missed the target.

Chiefs continued to dictate the tempo. Glody Lilepo‘s powerful shot from distance forced a fingertip save from Williams, who pushed the ball over the bar. Chiefs were the better side in the first half, dominating the midfield and preventing Sundowns from establishing their usual possession-based game.

Second Half Standoff

The second half began with Chiefs continuing to dominate possession and territory. However, Sundowns showed their threat when Arthur Sales unleashed a fierce shot that narrowly missed the target and nearly troubled Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

As the match wore on, it became a tense tactical battle, with both teams canceling each other out. The risk of making a single mistake seemed too great for either side. Despite the initial promise, the game lost its attacking flow, and chances became even scarcer.

Mthethwa had one final attempt from long range, but Williams once again proved why he is considered the country’s number one goalkeeper.

The goalless draw keeps Chiefs as the only team yet to concede a goal this season. They remain in second place with 10 points from four matches. Sundowns, meanwhile, moved into third place with eight points from four matches.
