Appollis Motivated By Mbokazi’s Overseas Move

Orlando Pirates forward Oswin Appollis believes Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s move to Chicago Fire serves as motivation for himself and other players in South Africa.
The 20-year-old Mbokazi will join the MLS club upon the conclusion of his time at the Africa Cup of Nations at the turn of the year.
The Chicago-based club announced the signing of the former Langalibalele Sports Academy player a few days ago on a five-year contract.
“As you can see, as young as he is, he’s a grown man. He has everything. I want to wish him all the best, and he deserves it, and I know he will do well at Chicago,” said Appollis, who was named man of the match as Pirates beat Marumo Gallants to win the Carling Knockout trophy on Saturday.
The man named ‘Mbekezeli,’ which means ‘the one who’s patient,’ has certainly not lived up to that name, at least on a professional level.
He burst onto the scene with his blistering performances, having made his debut for the Pirates in March.
His form has seen him being given the nickname, ‘TLB’, due to his hard man style of play.
These towering displays have generated lots of discourse on social media, which has led some individuals, whether because of banter or ignorance, to question his age.
It has not stopped there as the man from Hluhluwe has cemented his place on his national team and was named as the Buccaneers vice captain for the 2025-26 season.
Appollis, who himself joined the Orlando Pirates ranks this year, also highlighted the motivation that can be derived from his teammate’s move abroad.
“It is a motivation for all the players. It took him a year or nine months for him to get the move, and he deserves it,” added the former Polokwane City player.
The Chicago-bound youngster has certainly set the bar high, and it remains to be seen whether he can replicate his current form in North America.
