“Ignore The Noise”: Broos Sends Defiant Message To Bafana Ahead Of Azteca Clash

With Bafana Bafana’s highly anticipated showdown against Mexico projected to attract a global audience of over a billion viewers, coach Hugo Broos insists that tactical discipline and blocking out peripheral noise will dictate South Africa’s success.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off in just three days. Bafana Bafana will launch the tournament in Group A against co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca this Thursday.
While this marks unchartered territory for the current squad, Broos brings invaluable tournament pedigree to the camp. Although the 74-year-old tactician has never coached on the world stage, he represented Belgium as a player during their historic 1986 World Cup campaign, which ended with a semi-final defeat to eventual champions Argentina.
Thursday’s curtain-raiser will see millions of fans globally glued to their screens, while a partisan, capacity crowd at the Estadio Azteca will finally end the four-year wait for football’s ultimate spectacle.
“It will be a special and fantastic experience because my players have never encountered this kind of atmosphere before,” Broos noted. “It is absolutely vital that we stick to our game plan and ignore the stands. We know thousands of Mexican fans will fill the stadium, with only a few South Africans scattered among them.”
Despite being heavily outnumbered in Mexico City, Broos emphasizes that Bafana Bafana will draw immense strength from the millions of passionate supporters watching from home.
“We know we have the full support of the nation. We felt that energy over the last few weeks during our preparation camps in South Africa,” Broos added. “The entire country is standing with us. On Thursday, when the whistle blows, the players must remember they are playing for a nation that truly believes in them.”
The South African delegation has successfully settled into their base camp in Pachuca, Mexico. The squad will commute to Mexico City on Tuesday morning to wrap up their final tactical sessions ahead of the tournament opener.
