History Makers! Milford FC Weather Seshego Penalty Drama To Secure Top-Flight Status

Milford FC have secured a historic promotion to the Betway Premiership after grinding out a crucial 1-1 draw against Magesi FC in their final PSL Promotion/Relegation Play-off match at the Seshego Stadium on Saturday.

The KwaZulu-Natal outfit joins Kruger United in moving up to South Africa’s top flight for next season, with the latter having already secured automatic promotion as the Motsepe Foundation Championship winners.

Heading into Saturday’s high-stakes encounter, Milford needed only a single point to guarantee promotion, while Magesi required nothing less than an outright victory to retain their Premiership status. The two teams were left to battle it out for the final top-flight berth after Cape Town City failed to make a meaningful impact during the play-off mini-league.

The match opened at a frantic pace, with both sides pressing aggressively and signaling their determination to compete in the elite division next term.

Magesi drew first blood in the 14th minute when Edmore Chirambadare rose highest to head home a well-delivered cross from Reagan van der Ross, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Milford responded positively, pushing men forward in search of an immediate equalizer. However, it was Chirambadare who remained a constant menace, nearly doubling Magesi’s advantage in the 26th minute when his powerful effort struck the crossbar.

Milford were handed a golden opportunity to level matters in the 36th minute when the referee pointed to the penalty spot. However, Cheswyn Philander failed to convert the spot-kick, sending his effort rattling against the crossbar.

Magesi successfully protected their slender 1-0 cushion as the teams headed into the halftime break.

Milford emerged with renewed intent in the second half and finally got their reward in the 59th minute. Menzi Chili found space on the edge of the box and unleashed a powerful, left-footed strike into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.

Dikwena Tsa Meetse threw everything forward in search of a late winner as the match entered its closing stages, but Milford’s defensive rearguard stood resolute.

Ultimately, the stalemate was enough for Milford to wrap up promotion to the Betway Premiership, while Magesi’s failure to secure a win condemns them to relegation.

By holding out for the draw, the KZN side has officially relegated Magesi to the Motsepe Foundation Championship. They will join Orbit College, who finished at the bottom of the top-flight standings at the end of the regular season.

Milford’s breakthrough expansion means they will become the fifth KwaZulu-Natal club in the elite tier next season, joining provincial rivals AmaZulu, Golden Arrows, Durban City, and Richards Bay.
