Amajimbos’ U-17 AFCON Journey Ends Against Morocco

South Africa’s U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign concluded with a 3-1 quarter-final defeat to hosts Morocco at Stade El Bachir on Thursday night.

Morocco, aiming for their first title in the competition, opened the scoring in the 13th minute through Ismail El Aoud.

Neo Bohloko equalized for Amajimbos in the 54th minute, flicking the ball over Morocco’s goalkeeper, Chouaib Bellaarouch. Bohloko, of Kaizer Chiefs, capitalized on a well-executed assist from Emile Witbooi, who had been impressive throughout the tournament, after the Cape Town City attacker’s skillful run and cross.

Following the equalizer, Vela Khumalo’s side appeared to gain momentum, pressing high up the pitch.

However, just six minutes later, Morocco regained the lead through Ziyad Baha, who scored from close range after a flick-on by Ismail El Aoud.

Two minutes later, Morocco extended their lead to 3-1 when Baha secured his brace. Abdellah Ouazane provided the assist, and Baha calmly finished past Lwandiso Radebe.

Baha, in addition to his two goals, proved a constant threat to the South African defense.

The match seemed beyond South Africa’s reach, requiring a remarkable comeback. While they had previously rallied against Egypt in the group stage after falling 3-1 behind and eventually won 4-3, Morocco proved to be a formidable opponent, making it difficult for South Africa to mount a comeback.

Despite the loss, South Africa achieved their primary objective of qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, scheduled to take place in Qatar in November, the same country that hosted the senior men’s World Cup in 2022.

FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, Arsene Wenger, was present in the stands to witness the match.

Morocco will now face the winner of the quarter-final between Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal, who play each other on Friday.
