AmaZulu Aim To Capitalize On Chiefs’ Derby Defeat

AmaZulu co-coach Vusi Vilakazi is eager to capitalize on Kaizer Chiefs’ low morale when they meet at FNB Stadium on Tuesday. Chiefs are coming off a painful last-minute loss to Orlando Pirates at the same venue on Saturday.

Patrick Maswanganyi’s debatable Panenka penalty secured the win for Pirates in the sold-out Soweto derby. These emotionally charged matches can linger in players’ minds, and AmaZulu will aim to exploit this short turnaround time for Chiefs.

“We need to take advantage of them having suffered a loss,” said Vilakazi, whose side enters the game after a win against SuperSport United at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

“Recovery from a loss to a victory is not easy. So, we are coming with confidence, we are coming off a very tough win.

“We believe in ourselves that, on the day, if we perform to our potential, we can do wonders.

“I think that will give us a psychological advantage, to say, ‘These guys are coming from a loss, so let’s capitalize while they are still trying to fix things.’”

Vilakazi co-coaches AmaZulu with former Chiefs winger Arthur Zwane, who joined the club in October. Zwane, who led Chiefs to fifth place in his sole season as head coach in 2022/23, has extensive knowledge of Amakhosi.

Zwane played for Chiefs from 2000 to 2010, making 252 appearances, scoring 32 goals, and winning 12 trophies.

Vilakazi acknowledged they will rely on Zwane’s insights, given his two decades at Naturena in various roles.

“It’s a fact; he (Zwane) knows Kaizer Chiefs inside and out,” Vilakazi said, drawing laughter from the media.

“Yes, they have a new coach right now, but he knows their weaknesses and strengths. We will rely on him and support him where we can.

“Just like it happened against Gavin Hunt, since I know him (having not lost to him), he gave me a chance to deal with him.”
