Broos Concerned About Mudau And Mokoena’s Lack of Playing Time
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has expressed his concern over the lack of playing time for defenders Khuliso Mudau and midfielder Teboho Mokoena at Mamelodi Sundowns.
The duo was instrumental in South Africa’s third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast but have struggled for regular minutes at club level this season.
Both players were not selected by Sundowns after their return from the national team in September, following the team’s elimination from the MTN8 semi-finals. Mudau has been replaced at right-back by Thapelo Morena, while Mokoena has not been selected since the MTN8 elimination.
“That is the problem and I know I don’t think it will be a problem now,” said Broos.
“If the situation continues, then we have a problem with Teboho and Khuliso. On the other side, I have to respect the decisions of the coach (at Sundowns).
“Okay, he will have his reasons, but from my side it is difficult to understand why players like Teboho like Khuliso is not playing.
“They were one of the best players at the AFCON, they did fantastic games with the national team and suddenly they are not good enough to play and that is difficult for me to accept that.
“But, okay, that is the decision of the coach there at Sundowns and we will see what happens in the weeks.
“But again, stays, I will have to review my opinion about Teboho and Khuliso and not that they are not good enough, because they don’t play.”
Despite their lack of playing time at the club level, Broos has recalled Mudau and Mokoena to the Bafana Bafana squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Congo. The first leg will take place on 11 October at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, followed by the return leg four days later in Brazzaville.
