Cardoso Credits Luck And Hard Work For New Signings

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has admitted that the club was “very lucky” to secure two key signings before the close of the transfer window, as negotiations were challenging given the club’s location in Africa.

The reigning Betway Premiership champions made four additions during the current transfer window. Fawaaz Basadien was the first signing early in the season, followed by Katlego Ntsabeleng on loan from MLS side FC Dallas.

As the window closed on Monday, Sundowns captured Portuguese winger Nuno Santos from Vitória SC in a deal reportedly worth R20 million.

Sundowns are also finalizing the signing of Miguel Reisinho from Portuguese club Boavista. The midfielder, who left at the end of last season, is a free agent, meaning the deal is not restricted by transfer window deadlines. Cardoso confirmed that Reisinho’s arrival will be officially announced in the coming days.

“I think now we will be in a more comfortable position once we have the full group together after the U-20 World Cup,” said Cardoso.

The club recently released youngsters Kutlwano Letlhaku and Siyabonga Mabena from the senior setup, while reinforcements are expected to provide balance and depth to the squad.

Cardoso admitted that striking these deals was not easy:

“It is a pity that many months passed and games were played before these signings could be finalized. At the start of the market, it would have been absolutely impossible to bring these players. But sometimes the end of the market gives opportunities.

“We were lucky and the club worked hard to reinforce the team. The squad will now be stronger for the season.”

Sundowns are coming off their first league defeat of the season, losing 1-0 to Golden Arrows at King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday.

They will be eager to bounce back when they host Richards Bay at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday at 20:00.
