Chaos At FNB: Police Intervene As Chiefs and Pirates Clash Before Derby Draw

League leaders Orlando Pirates dropped vital points in the Betway Premiership title race after playing to a pulsating 1-1 draw against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in a drama-filled Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Sunday.

Despite the stalemate, Pirates remain top of the log with 59 points from 26 matches, although their position could come under threat if Mamelodi Sundowns secure a win against Richards Bay at Umhlathuze Sports Complex.

Chiefs, meanwhile, stay in third place on 47 points as they continue their push for a CAF Confederation Cup spot next season.

Both goals came in the second half, with Pule Mmodi opening the scoring for Amakhosi before Kamogelo Sebelebele netted the equaliser for Pirates.

This was the second meeting between the two sides this season, following Pirates’ dominant 3–0 victory at the same venue in February.

The match was delayed by 45 minutes, eventually kicking off at 15:45 instead of 15:00 due to tensions between the teams that required police intervention.

Chiefs players were forced to leave the pitch during the warm-up after an incident in their half, while ongoing crowd entry into the stadium also contributed to the delay.

When the game finally got underway, both teams showed high intensity in the opening 20 minutes. Pirates thought they had taken the lead through Appollis’ right-footed strike into the bottom-left corner, but assistant referee Zakhele Siwela ruled the goal offside.

Pirates suffered a setback after 30 minutes when Tshepang Moremi picked up an injury and was replaced by Patrick Mawanganyi in a move aimed at strengthening the midfield.

Mawanganyi’s introduction proved effective, as Pirates began to dominate, particularly in midfield. However, they were unable to convert their control into a goal, and the first half ended 0–0.

The second half resumed with similar intensity, but it was Chiefs who broke the deadlock. Mmodi finished a right-footed effort inside the box after being set up by Wandile Duba, who did well to take on Pirates’ defenders.

Pirates responded and eventually found their equaliser through Sebelebele after Brandon Petersen made a save, only for the ball to fall kindly to the Pirates attacker.

Both sides continued to push forward with strong performances, but neither could find a winner in the closing stages, as the match ended in a 1–1 draw.
