City Appoint Former Pirates And Chiefs Coach

Cape Town City has appointed former Kaizer Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral.

Ertugral, a lifelong resident of Cape Town, replaces Eric Tinkler, who was dismissed on New Year’s Eve. The Turkish-born coach has been appointed by City for the remainder of the season.

“Cape Town City is delighted to announce the appointment of Muhsin Ertugral as Technical Director of the club,” said City in a statement.

“Muhsin brings a wealth of local and international football experience to the club’s future project, having most recently served as the Technical Advisor of the Turkish national team for the past four years.

“Muhsin will step in as head coach until the end of the current season, joining first-team coaches Diogo Peral and Lebogang Manyama.”

The 65-year-old, who also coached the Orlando Pirates, last managed in the PSL with Maritzburg United from December 2018 to January 2019.

This appointment marks a reunion of sorts for Ertugral with City. He has a longstanding relationship with City chairman John Comitis, dating back to their time at Cape Town Spurs, where they achieved success together, winning the Nedbank Cup (Absa Cup) in 2007 with a victory over Mamelodi Sundowns.

He also guided Spurs to the MTN8 final in 2009/10, although he departed the club before the match, which they lost 6-0 to Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium.

Ertugral has coached the Cape Town club on three occasions. He also managed Arrows in the PSL. Notably, he led Mpumalanga Black Aces to a top-eight finish in the 2015/16 season, with Manyama among his players, before the club was sold to Comitis and rebranded as Cape Town City ahead of the 2016/17 season. Ertugral subsequently joined Pirates.

Ertugral will forever be remembered for leading Chiefs to the CAF Confederation Cup title in 2001.

Interestingly, Ertugral’s first match in charge of City will be against Chiefs at DHL Stadium on Sunday.
