City Complete Cream Signing

Cape Town City has officially confirmed the signing of Thulani Serero, who had been training with the club.

Serero, known as ‘Cream,’ had been without a club since his departure from Khorfakkan in 2024.

He trained with City for a period, and the club was impressed with his performance, as they sought attacking reinforcements.

The 34-year-old returns to South Africa after leaving in the 2010/11 season, during which he was named PSL Footballer of the Season with Ajax Cape Town.

He is reuniting with City boss John Comitis, who was among the directors of Ajax Cape Town at that time.

That Ajax side, which finished second in the league, narrowly missing the title to Orlando Pirates in the final game of the season, was highly regarded.

Serero then joined Ajax Amsterdam in the Netherlands, winning the Eredivisie title three consecutive times between 2011 and 2014. He also won the Dutch Super Cup with the Amsterdam club before spending three seasons with Vitesse.

Notably, Serero scored a goal for Ajax against Barcelona in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League group stage.

That Barcelona team featured prominent players such as Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Neymar, Javier Mascherano, Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique, Cesc Fabregas, and Andres Iniesta, among others, at the Amsterdam Arena.

After leaving Vitesse, Serero continued his career at Al Jazira in the United Arab Emirates, where he won the country’s Super Cup in the 2021/22 season.

He then spent a season at Khorfakkan, who secured his signing despite significant interest from Kaizer Chiefs last year.

Internationally, Serero earned 43 caps for Bafana Bafana, scoring two goals.

One of those goals was crucial for Bafana Bafana against Sudan in 2014 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, securing their qualification for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations under coach Shakes Mashaba. The subsequent 2-2 draw against Nigeria away was merely a formality.
