Cardoso Chuffed On Sundowns Scoring A Glut Of Goals

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has opened up about the club scoring more than 20 goals in February, which will some stopping for them from snatching the eighth successive league title.
The Brazilians scored 24 goals and conceded six in their seven games in all competitions for the February month. The number could increase when they host Kaizer Chiefs at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
On Wednesday, Cardoso’s side beat Sekhukhune United 4-2 at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium to increase the lead in the log to 51 points after 19 matches. They are 15 points ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates, who though have four games in hand.
After the game, The Portuguese tactician revealed what scoring many goals means for him and the Brazilians.
“The goals are not important unless they mean a victory,” Cardoso said.
“So, I don’t mind winning 1-0 if we win. Things will not always be like this and obviously, we want to make an offensive team because we want to attack, and also want the team to manage the game well.
“We balance when we attack because we also want to keep a clean sheet when we win. 1-0, 2-0, is fantastic but when the opponent start scoring goals is not good.”
Argentinean defender Lucas Suarez, who joined the club on loan in January, was one of the scorers, netting his first goal for the club with a towering header.
Cardoso, who admitted Suarez was a player that he wanted previously, said the Argentine is adapting well to South African football.
“Regarding Lucas [Suarez], it’s not easy for me in terms of options because we have many best center-backs,” the former Espérance Sportive de Tunis coach said.
“Lucas has been doing quite well, and the style of playing is not the same like in Argentina. I think he’s copying with the SA’s style of playing but he is still struggling there and there.
“But I think we need to manage him well in order for him to develop well.”
The 29-year-old will be hoping to make his seventh appearance for the Tshwane giant when they face Amakhosi on Saturday. The former Talleres defender made his debut for Sundowns against SuperSport United in the Tshwane Derby earlier this month.
