De Jong Wants To Spoil Chiefs Big Day Celebration

Stellenbosch FC attacker Andre de Jong has set his sights firmly on securing maximum points in their crucial Betway Premiership clash against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Fresh off his match-winning heroics in the CAF Confederation Cup, the New Zealand international believes his side is primed to translate continental success into domestic triumph.

De Jong played a pivotal role in Stellenbosch’s CAF victory over CD Lunda Sul on Sunday, scoring twice to keep their knockout stage aspirations alive.

Yet, the forward insists that the team has swiftly shifted focus to the task at hand — a high-stakes showdown against AmaKhosi at the iconic FNB Stadium.

“The mood in the camp is nice and positive. We’ve been together in Gauteng since Saturday and I think everyone is in a good space and looking forward to capping off the week with a good result against Kaizer Chiefs,” De Jong said.

With Stellenbosch playing only one league match in January due to their CAF commitments, De Jong underscored the importance of collecting all three points.

“It’s a massively important match for us, primarily because of the congestion around us in the league table and also because this will be our only league match in January because of our CAF commitments, so we need to get maximum points,” he added.

Stellenbosch currently finds itself in a favorable league position compared to Kaizer Chiefs, who continue to grapple with inconsistency. Despite Chiefs’ struggles, history leans in their favor — Amakhosi have claimed victory in four of their last five meetings with Stellenbosch.

However, the current form suggests the visitors might finally have the edge needed to upset the balance.

“Our focus has shifted to Wednesday’s match against KaizerChiefs, and I think we’ve been buoyed by a big result from the weekend and hopefully we can carry our recent CAF form into the league,” said De Jong.

Stellenbosch’s recent performances have showcased resilience and sharp attacking play, qualities they will need to replicate under the floodlights at FNB Stadium. On the other hand, Chiefs — though wounded — will want to crown a big day of existence as the club turns 55 years old.
