Former Sundowns Star Available On A Free Transfer

Former Mamelodi Sundowns winger Junior Mendieta is set for a premature exit at Greek Super League club Volos NFC six months after his arrival. The Argentine ace will now be free to sign for any team of his choice.
The Argentine international joined the Greek outfit from the defending Betway Premiership champions at the end of last season, after they won the league title and the African Football League, as well as runners-up finishes in the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup.
Mendieta is part of a mass exodus at Volos, with the club set to part ways with a staggering 22 players, including off-season signings. In preparation for the ongoing campaign, the Volos-based side brought in 23 players in the last transfer window.
While some players have already found new homes in the Greek top-flight division and other clubs across Europe, the 31-year-old will become a free agent – presenting a perfect market opportunity for potential suitors keen to bolster their squads.
The ex-Stellenbosch FC talisman scored four goals and provided one assist in 17 appearances in all competitions in Greece. The experienced forward started 12 out of the 17 encounters he played during his brief stint.
Meanwhile, a return to South Africa is not completely ruled out as there was a reported interest from Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs before the player moved to Chloorkop on the back of standout performances for Stellies.
Mendieta made his name at the Cape Winelands outfit, but his last season at the club was the pinnacle of his brilliance. He scored 10 goals and provided nine assists in 31 appearances across all competitions, which sealed his lucrative switch to Masandawana.
It remains to be seen whether Amakhosi will rekindle their interest in the Corrientes native. Coach Nasreddine Nabi is desperate for reinforcements to boost his frontline, which has lacked the cutting edge in front of goal.
There’s no doubt that there’ll be plenty of offers for a player of Mendieta’s caliber, making any potential deal difficult to conclude with competition to secure the services of the former Premier Soccer League (PSL) star expected to be stiff.
