Jose: Bay’s Game Was Ideal For MTN8 Final

Orlando Pirates coach José Riveiro believes that Richards Bay’s defensive structure, which made it difficult for them to penetrate, was an ideal preparation for his team’s upcoming MTN8 final against Stellenbosch.

The Soweto Giants will participate in their third consecutive MTN8 final when they face Steve Barker’s well-organized side at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday (18:00).

The match has been sold out, indicating strong public interest in Pirates and Stellenbosch, which have been two of the best teams in the league this season.

Pirates faced a tough challenge against Richards Bay in their league match last week, struggling to break through centrally and on the wings. They ultimately won the match through a set piece, a beautifully executed free kick by Kabelo Dlamini in the 82nd minute.

“I think they were well-organized, but we managed to create quite a few chances in the central areas,” Riveiro said. “There were times when they managed to deny us access to certain areas, but we were persistent in our approach, insisting, insisting, and finally creating some spaces.”

Stellenbosch, unlike Pirates, were held to a draw last weekend. Their aggressive, front-foot style of play will present a different challenge to Pirates compared to the defensive approach they faced against Richards Bay.

“Every game is different, and we know what Stellenbosch will bring to the table on Saturday,” said Riveiro, whose side lost three times to Stellenbosch last season, including the MTN8 second-leg semifinal. “We will analyze them carefully and develop a good plan. Every match is an opportunity for us as a group to improve.”
