Latest Update About Moses Mabhida’s Refurbishment

The eThekwini Municipality has provided an optimistic update on the refurbishment project at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, confirming that work is progressing well.

Late last year, the municipality approved a R236 million budget to rehabilitate the 15-year-old stadium, aiming to transform it into a premier tourist destination.

The stadium, which recently hosted the MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch and the Nedbank Cup last season, has faced structural deterioration in recent years. To address these issues and enhance its appeal, the municipality unveiled comprehensive refurbishment plans.

Enhancing Visitor Experience with New Attractions

Renovations currently underway include the installation of a new SkyCar, a big swing, a zip line, and an expanded viewing platform. The SkyCar, a glass-enclosed lift that ascends the stadium’s arch, is expected to be operational by summer 2025.

Other planned improvements include:

  • A larger viewing platform with a cantilevered glass floor, offering an “Air Walk” experience with a 60 percent increase in floor area.
  • A new SkyCar with increased travel time, designed to be accessible to people with disabilities.
  • A new Big Swing with improved access to its launch platform.
  • A new Zip Line that ends at People’s Park.
  • A Compression Ring Walk, providing panoramic views with a sea-facing bungee jump option.
  • Reinstated arch lighting with color-themed options.

This initiative, which began last year, aims to preserve the stadium’s world-class status and enhance its functionality for local and international events. It reflects the City’s commitment to maintaining key infrastructure while prioritizing safety, accessibility, and an improved visitor experience. The upgrades have been strategically phased to minimize disruptions to scheduled activities and public access.

Addressing Structural Integrity and Safety

Significant progress has been made on the emergency rehabilitation of the concrete and roof structure, focusing on major identified structural defects. This includes the rehabilitation of steel, concrete, and roof structures, addressing issues such as compromised mechanical joints, steel corrosion treatment, and the arch structure.

As part of the initial phase, crucial maintenance issues were tackled. These actions included replacing the damaged roof membrane, applying steel corrosion coatings to exposed areas, replacing the arch cladding, removing corroded SkyCar infrastructure, and improving drainage systems for easier maintenance.

During the Community Services Committee meeting on July 17, a request for an extension of the emergency remedial work contract at the stadium was noted. This extension, subject to Council approval, aims to ensure the continued progress of critical repairs necessary to maintain the facility’s structural integrity and safety. The committee acknowledged the importance of completing the remaining work within the revised timeline and emphasized the need for close monitoring to ensure the project meets both quality and compliance standards.

A Boost for Tourism and Economy

Once completed, the renovations will ensure Moses Mabhida Stadium not only adheres to international standards but also is better equipped to host major events, enhance visitor experience, and contribute to the City’s economic and tourism growth.

The stadium has already successfully hosted several high-profile events, including the 2025 Nedbank Cup Final. It is set to host the Toyota Cup between Kaizer Chiefs and Asante Kotoko on 26 July, as well as various national league matches.

This refurbishment not only secures Moses Mabhida’s status as a premier venue for sports, concerts, and cultural events but also contributes to local job creation, skills development, and small business support through the procurement of services from local contractors.

The refurbishment reflects eThekwini Municipality’s ongoing efforts to invest in infrastructure that fosters tourism, economic growth, and community pride. The City will continue to provide updates as the project progresses and encourages residents and visitors to stay engaged and take pride in this world-class facility.

As a major tourism draw in Durban, the city generated close to R1 billion in recent months, including revenue from the Nedbank Cup final, the iconic Comrades Marathon, and the Hollywoodbets Durban July.
