Lebusa Insists Sundowns Is Even More Dangerous

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mosa Lebusa says he believes the club is ‘now even more dangerous’ despite the recent technical team changes going into the new season.

The shock departure of Rulani Mokwena, who has since joined Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club, and the subsequent appointment of Manqoba Mngqithi as his successor sparked speculations about a potential decline in Sundowns’ dominance.

However, Lebusa has dismissed such claims, insisting that it’s been easy to adjust to the new coaching leadership. “Coach Manqoba has always been here, so it wasn’t much of an adjustment,” Lebusa said.

“I think we are lucky in that department. We just added a few faces here and there, but I think it’s more about them adjusting to us and as time goes on, we’ll get used to each other and they will know what everyone that’s here is about and from there the ship will move forward.”

The reigning Betway Premiership champions bolstered their technical team with the return of Steve Komphela as a senior coach and a surprise addition of Romain Folz, who is backed by Lebusa to succeed as an assistant coach. “He’s a breath of fresh air, a young coach,” Lebusa said.

“A lot of us have never worked with him and when he came in, the first thing he did was to take charge and we were surprised at how bold he is, but as time went on, we got to understand the type of a person he is – very outspoken and I think he’s going to help us a lot in the team.”

The 31-year-old centre-back is adamant that the Brazilians are stronger than ever and determined to maintain their winning mentality and compete for major honors following their pre-season in Austria.

“I don’t think there’s any vulnerability in our play or our team, he’s [Mngqithi] been with so many teams, he’s got so much experience,” he stated.

“Even when he was the assistant coach, he was giving us a lot of information. So, I don’t think what the people are saying that we are more vulnerable is true, I don’t think that I think now we are even more dangerous,” Lebusa added.

Sundowns will kickstart their campaign with an MTN8 quarterfinal clash against Polokwane City on Sunday (15:00) at Lucas Moripe stadium – a competition Mngqithi has previously won as the sole head coach at Golden Arrows in the 2009/10 season.
