Libya Fire Former Pirates Coach
Libya has fired former Orlando Pirates head coach Milutin Sredojevic just weeks before the 2025 AFCON qualifiers double header against Nigeria.
Libya will face the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Uyo next month before both teams meet again a few days later in Tripoli for match day four of the qualifying campaign.
The Serbian mentor was dismissed due to the team’s poor start to the AFCON qualifying series.
The Mediterranean Knights drew 1-1 at home with Rwanda and then lost 2-1 to Benin on the road, leaving them at the bottom of Group D with only one point.
They aimed to secure important points in the match day three and four of the AFCON qualifiers to restore the hope of qualifying in AFCON 2025 in Morocco.
Libya Football Federation appointed Sredojevic as the national team head coach in October 2023, on a deal until June 2026.
Micho, as Sredojevic is fondly known in football circles, guided Orlando Pirates to the semi-final of the CAF Champions League in 2006 and to two league runners-up in the 2017/18 and 2-18/19 seasons. He was at the Soweto giants when they lost the Carling Knockout Cup final to Baroka FC on penalty shootouts in Port Elizabeth.
Besides Pirates, Micho has previously coached teams such as Al Hilal, SC Villa, Young Africans, Zamalek, and Saint George, and won Ethiopian league titles with ST George.
He will forever be remembered for taking Uganda to their first AFCON finals in 2017 in Gabon for the first time in 38 years.
