Makhanya Salutes The Stunning Global Rise Of Mbokazi

Philadelphia Union defender Olwethu Makhanya has lauded the rapid international ascent of fellow South African youngster Mbekezeli Mbokazi, as both players prepare to anchor Bafana Bafana’s defensive lines at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Makhanya, who currently plays for the Philadelphia Union in the MLS, spoke highly of Mbokazi after the former Orlando Pirates defender completed his move to Chicago Fire in January this year.

The two young defenders are now set to represent South Africa at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, marking another major milestone in their growing careers.

For Makhanya, the tournament will mark his first involvement with the senior national team at a major international competition, and he believes Mbokazi has fully earned the recognition he is receiving.

“And then about Mbokazi, I mean, as you said, in recent years he’s been doing really well,” said Makhanya.

“You know, everyone is talking about him, and he has really raised the flag high.”

The former Stellenbosch FC defender also addressed competition within the Bafana Bafana squad, particularly in the centre-back department, where he is capable of playing on both the right and left sides of defence.

Despite the strong competition for places, the 22-year-old insisted he is not focused on competing against teammates, but rather on contributing whenever called upon.

“Personally, I believe I have all the qualities to play in that position, and I don’t think I’m here to compete with anyone because I believe everyone in this team deserves to be here,” he added.

“It’s all about taking your opportunity when it comes and doing the job.”

Makhanya is still waiting to make his senior debut for Bafana Bafana and will be hoping to earn his first cap before the start of the World Cup.

South Africa is scheduled to face Nicaragua in an international friendly on Friday before travelling to Mexico for the global tournament.

The defender will now be aiming to use the remaining preparations to impress the technical team and potentially force his way into the starting line-up as Bafana Bafana prepare for one of their biggest international assignments in recent years.
