‘Not About The Result’: Why Cardoso Says Bafana’s Send-off Match Matters More Than You Think

Mamelodi Sundowns boss Miguel Cardoso labeled Bafana Bafana’s upcoming clash against Nicaragua as crucial preparation for the World Cup.

Bafana will face Nicaragua in a send-off match at Orlando Amstel Arena on Friday as they continue preparations for the global tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico in less than two weeks.

Hugo Broos announced his final squad at the Union Buildings on Wednesday, with the Belgian tactician largely sticking with the core group of players who have been part of his rebuilding process over the years.

South Africa head into the match against a Nicaragua side ranked 131st in the FIFA World Rankings, while Bafana are currently ranked 60th.

However, Cardoso believes the game is not primarily about the result, but rather about building the right mentality and momentum ahead of the World Cup.

“The match for them on Friday is mainly a preparation game,” said Cardoso.

“They need to work on their dynamics, create the right attitude, and develop the behaviours they want to take into the World Cup. I hope they can perform with those behaviours so that they are ready for the moments when results will really matter.”

Cardoso just led Sundowns to their historic second CAF Champions League title last Sunday after a tense aggregate victory over Morocco’s AS FAR.

Meanwhile, Cardoso’s side will also be in action on Friday, with Mamelodi Sundowns set to face RB Leipzig in a post-season friendly at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
