MaMkhize: I Don’t Want Last Season’s Stress

Royal AM chairperson Shauwn Mkhize has admitted that it was stressful to see her club among the relegation candidates last season, saying it prevented her from bringing the speaker into the game to play music.

During Royal AM’s first season after MaMkhize purchased the status of Bloemfontein Celtic ahead of the 2021/22, the team was one to watch, finishing third under current coach John Maduka and qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup. However, they struggled to replicate that success, with last season bringing stressful times as they finished 12th in the table and only escaped relegation by winning the final game against now-defunct Moroka Swallows.

“This season I don’t want to go where I was last season,” Mkhize told Sportswire. “Whatever happened, I don’t want to fight until the last game. It was a stressful time, and I ended up not bringing my speaker to some games because it felt like it wasn’t helping.”

Mkhize is optimistic that the team can return to the dizzy heights of 2022 this coming season. Despite a FIFA ban on signing players this transfer window, Royal AM won the KZN Premier’s Cup this past weekend, defeating Motsepe Foundation Championship side Maritzburg United 4-3 on penalties at Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi Regional Stadium. They eliminated defending champions AmaZulu 3-0 in the semifinals on Saturday.

Royal AM is now the most successful club in the history of this pre-season tournament in KZN, having won it four times, twice as Royal Eagles.

“Let me tell you, in football, I have learned, I have seen the highs, seen the lows,” said Mkhize. “I think we have seen it all. We must learn from our mistakes and see how we can improve, and of course, the ban is not fair to us.”

Mkhize declined to comment further on the club’s ban, saying “No, thanks” before walking away.
