Mngqithi: My Team Is Stronger Than Last Season
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi says his team is very strong and they are even stronger than last season.
Sundowns offered Mngqithi a chance to lead the club at the beginning of this season after they parted ways with Rulani Mokwena.
The Umzimkhulu-born coach decided to call Steve Komphela and Romain Folz to assist him at Sundowns. The Brazilians have lost two games this season under Mngqithi. They lost against Stellenbosch FC in the first and second leg of the MTN8 Cup at Lucas Moripe Stadium and also at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
But the Tshwane-based side progressed in the CAF Champions League group stages recently against Mbabane Swallows. They won 4-0 in both games they played against the Eswatini-based team. Sundowns have also been impressive in the Betway Premiership as they have won all their four games, and they are currently in position number one with 12 points.
Following their 2-1 victory against Royal AM last night, Mngqithi was happy and even said his team is on the right path.
“No, I wouldn’t want to go into that space [where many people were doubting me at the beginning] but I would prefer to just take each game as it comes,” Mngqithi said.
“I’ve always been optimistic that the team is still gonna come right. The team is strong, the team is probably [and] even stronger than last season.
“I’ve always believed that we are on the right track. I’ve always believed that the approach that one has chosen for the team is the right one for the team because we have a bigger responsibility in the [CAF] Champions League,” he continued.
“We are also expected to try to create a little bit more so that we maximize our chances of scoring goals. It’s pleasing to see our attackers scoring the way they are, and hopefully, we will build from this.”
Sundowns also started their journey in the Carling Knockout with an impressive victory. They defeated Lamontville Golden Arrows FC 5-0 last Saturday.
This club will face Kaizer Chiefs in the quarterfinals of this competition.
This weekend Sundowns will visit Polokwane City at Peter Mokaba Stadium in the Betway Premiership. These two sides have met each other this season in the quarterfinals of the MTN8 Cup where we saw Sundowns winning 1-0 in extra-time.
