Nabi: Vilakazi Is Like My Son

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi was delighted to see Mfundo Vilakazi score the winning goal as they defeated Marumo Gallants 2-1 in their opening match of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season at Toyota Stadium on Saturday, adding that it is his responsibility to protect him from the media.

Vilakazi, who came on as a substitute for Christian Saile in the 60th minute, secured the victory for Chiefs in the 79th minute.

His goal came after a pinpoint cross from Wandile Duba and followed the sending-off of former Chiefs player Joseph Malongoane for Gallants.

Sekele Sithole had opened the scoring for Gallants, but Mduduzi Shabalala’s equalizer had brought the game level.

With the win, Chiefs now sit atop the Betway Premiership standings alongside Polokwane City.

“I’m very happy for my team and Vilakazi especially, because he is like my son,” said Nabi after the game.

“I need to protect him because he is not starting games. I have to protect him from the media, magazines because he has a big talent. He needs to understand that he is starting his career for Kaizer Chiefs and he needs to make sacrifices.

“I have to balance that because it is my job to protect him and other talented young players. But I’m very happy for him and new players and congratulations to them.”

Chiefs will aim to continue their winning streak when they host Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium on Sunday, 22 September.
