Orlando Pirates’ two-goal hero, Mohau Nkota, credits his telepathic connection with teammate Relebohile Mofokeng to their time together in the DStv Diski Challenge under coach Joseph Makhanya.

Nkota was the star of the show as Pirates edged AmaZulu 2-1 at Orlando Stadium in the Betway Premiership on Friday, securing the top spot with 15 points from five matches.

Mofokeng provided the assists for both of Nkota’s goals in the first half, showcasing their impressive partnership.

For the first goal, Mofokeng set up Nkota, who unleashed a powerful shot into the near post. The second goal saw Mofokeng lay the ball off to Nkota, who calmly slotted it into the far corner.

“Playing with Rele has been a thing from DDC. It’s a brilliant combination between the both of us as youngsters. It’s in the blood,” Nkota reflected with a smile.

This was Nkota’s second start for Pirates’ senior team, and he was awarded the Man of the Match award. The young forward expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and his appreciation for the coaches who have supported him, particularly Makhanya.

“Coach (Jose Riveiro) gave me an opportunity, and I’m glad I could prove that I can do it,” Nkota said, beaming with pride.  

“I’d like to say thank you to Coach Duku Duku for everything he’s done for me. Also, thank Coach Mxolisi, DDC’s manager, and Coach Riveiro for giving me this opportunity.  

“I thank for everything they have done for us. This is something I have been waiting for a long time and I had to process.”   

Nkota’s impressive performance has raised questions about his role in the team when Monnapule Saleng returns from injury. Saleng has also been a standout performer this season, but his absence has allowed Nkota to shine. It will be intriguing to see how coach Riveiro manages the situation when Saleng is back
