Santos Urges Focus As Sundowns Eye Top Spot
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Nuno Santos has stressed the importance of focus and mentality as they prepare for a crucial Betway Premiership clash against Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Brazilians head into the encounter in second place on the league standings with 47 points from 20 matches, just one point behind log leaders Orlando Pirates, who sit on 48 points after playing a game more.
Pirates dropped points in a disappointing draw against Siwelele on Saturday, opening the door for Sundowns to take control of the title race.
A victory for Sundowns would see them climb to the top of the log with 50 points, moving two points clear of Pirates and strengthening their grip on the championship race as the season intensifies.
Looking ahead to the encounter, Santos highlighted the importance of maintaining the right mindset, emphasizing that no fixture in the league can be taken lightly.
“In football, there are no easy games,” Santos said.
“We have to go with the right mentality, intentions, and be focused on the game.
“I think if we can do that, then we will be able to play our style, and the most important thing is to get the three points.”
Since arriving at Sundowns, the Portuguese midfielder has quickly become an influential figure in the squad. His performances have steadily improved, with his growing confidence evident in recent matches across domestic and continental competitions.
In their most recent outing, Santos delivered an impressive display in the CAF Champions League quarter-final clash against Malian side Stade Malien, providing two crucial assists.
He also played another lovely pass when Sundowns beat Pirates 2-1 in the blockbuster test this month at FNB Stadium.
Reflecting on his journey at the club so far, Santos expressed satisfaction with his progress and praised the support he has received from teammates and the technical team.
“I’m enjoying it as I’m training every day to be better, and my teammates also help me a lot,” he added.
“I’m feeling more comfortable now than when I arrived. But it is a process, it’s not a normal thing – I’m just getting used to the coach and playing games here, and I’m also happy about that.”
Beyond the domestic assignment, Santos will also be aiming to maintain his fine form when Sundowns face Stade Malien in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal in Mali on Friday.
