Stellenbosch Hold Zamalek To Goalless Draw in CCC Cup First Leg

Stellenbosch endured a tense encounter against Zamalek, ultimately securing a goalless draw in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal at DHL Stadium on Wednesday.
Zamalek, who were runners-up to RS Berkane in last season’s competition, largely controlled the match, frustrating Steve Barker’s side, who struggled to create clear scoring opportunities.
The visitors dominated the latter stages of the game, launching sustained attacks that left coach Barker visibly concerned on the sidelines. To preserve the draw, Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens resorted to time-wasting tactics.
The tie remains finely balanced heading into the second leg at Cairo International Stadium on Wednesday.
Zamalek, coached by former Nigeria mentor Jose Peseiro, who led the Super Eagles to the Africa Cup of Nations final last year, nearly snatched a late victory. In the 86th minute, Naser Mansry’s powerful close-range header appeared destined for the net, but Stephens produced a stunning left-handed save, pushing the ball onto the post.
The first half was largely uneventful, with both sides struggling to create meaningful chances, resulting in a goalless stalemate.
Clear-cut opportunities were scarce, with neither team managing to create a clear sight of goal.
However, Zamalek, who lost to Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2016 CAF Champions League final, intensified their efforts in the second half, forcing Stephens into a crucial save that prevented the visitors from taking a crucial advantage.
Stellenbosch will now know that a scoring draw in the second leg in Cairo would be sufficient to secure their passage to the semi-finals.
Stellenbosch’s result prevented a clean sweep for South African teams in this week’s CAF club competitions. On Tuesday, Orlando Pirates secured a 1-0 away victory against MC Alger in their Champions League quarterfinal first leg, while Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Espérance de Tunis in Pretoria.
