Sundowns To Face Pirates In The Nedbank After Beating Stellies

Mamelodi Sundowns booked their place in the Nedbank Cup final after defeating Stellenbosch FC 2-1 in a thrilling semi-final encounter at Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday.

The victory ended Stellenbosch’s impressive 25-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

A rematch of last year’s quarter-final, which Stellenbosch won 2-1, Khuliso Mudau opened the scoring for Sundowns in the 11th minute, firing a brilliant shot from a tight angle after a perfect feed from Lucas Ribeiro Costa. Stellenbosch threatened to equalize when Genino Palace pulled one back in the 81st minute, but Thembinkosi Lorch had already sealed the win for Sundowns with a goal in the 74th minute.

The match wasn’t without its oddities. Referee Zakhele Siwela, a World Cup and AFCON official, had to be substituted due to a hamstring injury in the first half. This led to a lengthy stoppage time, with the first half extended by 13 minutes.

Sundowns, fresh off their record-extending seventh DStv Premiership title win on Thursday by crushing Kaizer Chiefs, will now face defending champions Orlando Pirates in the final at Mbombela Stadium on 1 June.
