Who Will Be In Goals For Bafana Tonight? Broos Has The Answer

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has expressed confidence in his team’s goalkeeping options despite the absence of injured captain Ronwen Williams for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Uganda at Orlando Stadium on Friday (18:00).

Williams is the skipper of the national team and was key when Bafana Bafana claimed the bronze medal in the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast earlier this year, which has resulted in becoming the first goalkeeper to be nominated for the Yashin trophy playing on the African continent.

In his absence, Broos will have to choose between Orlando Pirates’ Sipho Chaine, SuperSport United’ Ricardo Goss, and AmaZulu’s Veli Mothwa.

Mothwa is the most experienced of the three goalkeepers and has yet to concede a goal for the national team. Chaine, while having played regularly for Pirates this season, has not yet made his debut for Bafana Bafana.

On the other hand, Goss’ last appearance with the national team was one to forget in March. A simple back pass against Andorra in the FIFA Series in Algeria, the ball got stuck in his boot and Ricard Fernandez took advantage to score in the empty net in the fifth minute.

“The only thing I can do is to give them confidence, that’s all,” replied Broos when asked if he has made up his mind on who will be in goals.

“I believe in these guys that are there and who will be in goals, you will see on Friday when the game starts.

“But whoever will be, I will have confident in the guy who will start and I know it is not easy when you have to replace a guy like Ronwen. But okay, Ronwen is not here.

“With all the performances and the good things he did for this team, we can’t count on him. We have to put our faith and confidence in the goalkeeper who will play the game.

“Again, I’m not afraid of that. This for me will not be an excuse after the game if the goalkeeper (selected) doesn’t succeed and say ‘But Ronwen was not there’.

Broos emphasized that the absence of Williams should not be an excuse for a poor performance. “We have 23 players and you saw already in the past those guys who were on the bench sometimes decided the game. Let’s go to June in the game against Zimbabwe, Thapelo Morena came in and scored two goals and we won the game.

“They are as important as the guys who are on the pitch. It will now be the goalkeeper who was on the bench in the previous games who will have to start, no problems for me.”
