Wright: I Want To Watch The Soweto Derby Again

Former Arsenal striker and England international Ian Wright has expressed a desire to witness yet again the Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
Wright, a Premier League winner with Arsenal in 1997/98, was asked by Garry Neville during the popular podcast “Stick To Football” alongside Jamie Carragher, Roy Keane, Jill Scott, and Paul Scholes, to name a derby they’d like to attend.
The former Gunner previously attended the Soweto Derby in 2019 as an ambassador for the Carling Black Label Cup, which was won by Pirates.
When asked about his dream derby, Wright mentioned the fierce rivalry between River Plate and Boca Juniors in Argentina but also expressed a fondness for the Soweto Derby: “You know what, I’d like to see the Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates Derby in South Africa. It’s unbelievable.”
Wright has a personal connection to South African football, having scored for England against Bafana Bafana in 1997 in a friendly match at Old Trafford. He has also been associated with Orlando Pirates, receiving their jersey and tracksuit from Adidas and posting the pic on social media, which went viral in South Africa.
While the Soweto Derby won’t be played in the league this year, fans may have a chance to see it in the Carling Knockout Cup and the draw of that competition will take place next week.
Fellow football pundit Carragher, who won the UEFA Champions League in 2005, which he termed the greatest Champions League final ever because Liverpool had to come from behind three times, expressed interest in watching a rugby event, specifically the British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa.
“I would like to watch the Lions Series in South Africa,” said the former Liverpool defender.
Well, Carragher, the Lions Series took place in 2021 behind closed doors in South Africa due to Covid-19 restrictions and Springbok won it 2-1 in three-match series.
The next Lions tour is scheduled for Australia in 2025.
