Zwane To Count Ofori’s Experience Against Pirates

AmaZulu co-coach Arthur Zwane will rely on the experience of Richard Ofori as his side faces Orlando Pirates in the Betway Premiership at Orlando Stadium later on Friday.

Ofori is set to start in goal for Usuthu as they aim to upset the formidable Pirates side, who are eager to reclaim the top spot in the league. The Ghanaian international was released by Pirates at the end of last season after four years with the Soweto giants.

This after he lost the place to Sipho Chaine, who took the number spot in the second half of the 2022/23 season when Pirates won the double – the MTN8 and the Nedbank Cup.

Ofori joined AmaZulu as a free agent to address the team’s goalkeeping concerns, particularly after Veli Mothwa’s recent errors. In his debut against Stellenbosch, Ofori impressed with numerous saves, showcasing his quality despite the eventual 2-1 loss.

Zwane believes that injuries hindered Ofori’s progress at Pirates. He highlighted the goalkeeper’s previous success at the club and his ability to compete at a high level.

“You know when I look at Richard, I think what killed his momentum was the injuries,” said Zwane.

“Remember, he was number one at Pirates, he was doing very well until he got an injury and I think when he came back, he was never himself. Immediately he played for about a month or less than that and then he was out again for a very long time.

“So, obviously being number one in the national team (Ghana), being number in such a team like Pirates and someone comes in and he does well, now you are battling to come back to claim your position.

“You have got to compete and that is exactly what is happening now. Now Richard is given an opportunity, he did well against Stellenbosch, and Veli has been number one and doing well. But unfortunately, because football is a game of mistakes, (it is why he didn’t play).

“But when it comes to that, it is healthy competition, and everyone has a chance to prove himself and everyone we believe in them that they will give us quality.

“The more you have a competition in the squad, the better and the team will perform because now everyone will be on his toes and work hard to play. So, that is what we are trying to do In Richards’s case. There is no exception.”

During his time at Pirates, Ofori won three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cups. His experience and talent will be crucial for AmaZulu as they look to secure a positive result for the first time this season against their former club.
