Sundowns Need Just Four Points To Claim The League

Mamelodi Sundowns took a significant step towards securing the Betway Premiership title with a convincing 3-0 victory over Chippa United at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Goals from Iqraam Rayners, Jayden Adams, and Thapelo Maseko sealed the win for the Brazilians, who now sit 12 points clear of second-place Orlando Pirates.

Sundowns now just four points to claim the 2024/25 season for the record eighth successful season.

The match began with Sundowns dominating possession, but Chippa’s defense held strong, denying the Brazilians a shot on goal in the opening 10 minutes.

However, the Brazilians’ persistence paid off in the 29th minute when Khuliso Mudau delivered a precise cross to Rayners, who slotted home the opening goal.

Just before halftime, Adams doubled Sundowns’ lead after Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali mishandled Teboho Mokoena’s free-kick.

In the second half, Chippa mounted a strong challenge, creating several scoring opportunities but ultimately failing to capitalize.

Sundowns’ goalkeeper Denis Onyango made a crucial save to deny Sinoxolo Kwayiba’s header in the 60th minute.

The Brazilians responded by introducing Lucas Ribeiro and Thapelo Maseko, who made an immediate impact. Maseko scored the third goal in the 81st minute, capitalizing on Arthur Sales’ assist.

This victory sees Sundowns on the brink of clinching the title, needing just a win and a draw from their remaining three matches.

The Brazilians will face Stellenbosch on Sunday at Loftus Stadium and then travel to the Eastern Cape to meet Chippa United again next week Wednesday.
