Amajimbos Secure U17 World Cup Qualification Despite Loss To Burkina Faso

The Amajimbos have qualified for the U17 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year, despite a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in their final CAF U17 African Cup of Nations group match at Stade Larbi Zaouli on Sunday.
The young South Africans finished as runners-up in Group B with four points, five points behind group winners Burkina Faso, who collected nine points. Egypt’s 2-1 victory over Cameroon, which occurred simultaneously, did not prevent South Africa from qualifying for the World Cup.
Amajimbos, coached by Vela Khumalo, entered the match following a 4-3 win against Egypt and a goalless draw against a strong Cameroon side. South Africa knew that a win would secure them the top spot in the group, while a draw or even a loss, combined with a specific result from the Cameroon-Egypt game, would still be enough to qualify for the U17 FIFA World Cup.
Although Burkina Faso started strongly, South Africa gradually gained control of the game and created better scoring opportunities. Neo Bohloko, who scored twice against Egypt, had a powerful shot blocked, and Emile Witbooi missed a chance inside the box.
During that play, Witbooi appeared to be fouled in the ankle by Mikael Coulibaly. Referee Aline Umutoni from Rwanda reviewed the incident via VAR and awarded a penalty. However, Burkina Faso goalkeeper Prince Ouedraogo dived to his left to deny Bohloko from the penalty spot.
South Africa continued to create chances. Teboho Mlangeni made a driving run, evading Burkina Faso defenders, and set up Omphemetse Sekgoto, who fired his shot wide. Burkina Faso’s initial momentum seemed to fade as South Africa controlled the proceedings.
However, the momentum shifted, and Burkina Faso should have scored before halftime, but Loukman Tapsoba and Halidou Diakité missed clear opportunities. In the other group match, Cameroon and Egypt were tied 1-1 at halftime.
Early in the second half, Bohloko was involved in another penalty incident, following a well-executed passing move by South Africa. Referee Umutoni initially awarded the penalty, but after a VAR review, the decision was overturned, as Bohloko appeared to have his foot entangled.
South Africa then committed a defensive error, allowing Burkina Faso’s Tapsoba to intercept the ball and set up Junior Bara for the opening goal. South Africa struggled to break down Burkina Faso’s defense, despite their intricate passing. Bohloko was then denied by Ouédraogo from close range. South Africa continued to have problems with an extra touch in the box, and Burkina Faso cleared their lines.
South Africa’s defensive woes continued, as they conceded a second goal in the 89th minute. Tapsoba unleashed a powerful shot past Lwandiso Radebe, securing the victory for Burkina Faso.
