De Jong Eyes Dream Soweto Derby Debut

Orlando Pirates attacker Andre de Jong has shared his expectations ahead of the upcoming Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs.
The highly anticipated, sold-out encounter is set to kick off at FNB Stadium on Sunday. De Jong will be hoping to make his debut in the famous fixture, having only featured on the bench during their previous meeting this season, when Pirates secured a 3–0 victory in February.
The New Zealand-born forward is expecting an exciting contest between the two sides. He stressed that Pirates are determined to come out on top as they look to stay firmly in the title race with Mamelodi Sundowns, who are just one point behind them.
“It’s an interesting one. Both teams are in good form and carry confidence into this game,” said De Jong.
“Obviously, the way the last derby went, it was a great day for the club, and we’ll try to replicate that on Sunday. We’re not taking them lightly at all, because every game in the Betway Premiership is tough.”
De Jong, who joined Pirates from Stellenbosch during the January transfer window, has made eight appearances and scored one goal so far.
“When you add the derby atmosphere and ninety thousand people, it becomes a massive occasion and a high-pressure situation. But we’ve handled those moments well this season, and hopefully we can do that again and stay in the title race,” he continued.
The former AmaZulu attacker also reflected on his first derby experience, when he was an unused substitute.
“My first derby experience was incredible, even just being there,” he said.
“Sitting on the bench and witnessing the atmosphere in the stadium, with both sets of supporters, was special. There were plenty of smiles from the Pirates fans that day, and it was amazing to be part of.
“While playing for Royal AM, AmaZulu and Stellenbosch, it was always a dream of mine to be involved in a big game like that.”
De Jong added that he hopes to get some minutes on the pitch as Pirates take on the Glamour Boys, who will be eager to avoid another defeat to their rivals.
At the same time, Pirates will be targeting a victory to strengthen their position at the top of the table.
“Hopefully I can get onto the field on Sunday and experience it from the pitch. It’s an incredible match to be part of, and I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.
