Maswanganyi Takes Iconic Number For Pirates’ Champions League Campaign
Reigning PSL Players’ Player of the Season, Patrick Maswanganyi, will don the coveted number 10 jersey for Orlando Pirates as they embark on their CAF Champions League campaign.
Maswanganyi will make his debut in the iconic jersey when Pirates face Madagascan side CS- Disciples in the first round of the competition on Sunday.
Pirates, who last reached the Champions League final in 2013, were eliminated in the second round last season by Jwaneng Galaxy. To comply with CAF regulations, clubs are required to submit a squad of 40 players, each assigned a number from 1 to 40.
The number 10 jersey was previously worn by Vincent Pule, who left the club at the end of the previous season. Maswanganyi, who currently wears number 28 in the PSL, will now take on the iconic role.
Rising star Relebohile Mofokeng, who missed a penalty against Galaxy, will inherit Thembinkosi Lorch’s number 3 jersey following Lorch’s departure to Mamelodi Sundowns in January transfer window.
Pirates will need to navigate two preliminary rounds to reach the Champions League group stage.
