Nedbank Cup Match Postponed Again Amidst Royal AM Financial Woes
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has once again postponed Nedbank Cup matches due to the ongoing financial uncertainty surrounding Royal AM.
The round of 16 match was scheduled for this weekend, but the preceding round of 32 fixture, which would determine Sekhukhune United’s opponent, has yet to be played.
Milford FC was supposed to host Royal AM at Harry Gwala Stadium in the round of 32, but Royal AM is currently unable to play matches as club assets belonging to Shauwn Mkhize have been frozen by the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
Mkhize reportedly owes SARS close to R40 million, leading to the appointment of a curator to oversee the club’s affairs. Royal AM’s last match was on 29 December, a Betway Premiership loss to TS Galaxy.
“In light of the latest legal developments, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has no option but to postpone Nedbank Cup fixture No. 21 (Royal AM/Milford FC vs. Sekhukhune United) to a date to be confirmed,” the PSL stated.
“The PSL apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause to the affected Member Clubs, PSL partners, and supporters. Further updates will be communicated as soon as the issues impacting the fixture have been clarified. The League will not make further comments on this matter until then.”
On Friday, the Pretoria and KZN high courts dismissed Royal AM’s urgent application, which sought to have a curator provide assurances to the league, enabling them to play the remaining league matches and their Nedbank Cup round of 32 game. The application was dismissed with costs.
With three months remaining in the season, the resolution of this matter remains uncertain.
