Relebohile Mofokeng’s Father Vows To Keep Young Star Grounded
Relebohile Mofokeng’s father, Sechaba, emphasizes his commitment to keeping his son grounded despite media hype and transfer speculations surrounding the young star’s future with Orlando Pirates.
Mofokeng is basking in the glory of his recent success. His skillfully scored in the Nedbank Cup final against Mamelodi Sundowns in what was a pivotal moment in securing Orlando Pirates’ victory.
This performance further scored him a place in the national team, Bafana Bafana, as they prepare for their crucial World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.
Despite not featuring in the first qualifier against Nigeria, Mofokeng enjoyed a solid season with OPirates. He solidified his position with consistent appearances (38 games) across competitions, contributing significantly with five goals and six assists.
“My primary focus is to ensure he remains humble and continues to work hard,” Sechaba stated in an interview with Sportswire.
Sechaba himself has a footballing background. He played for Tembu Royals, a lower-division side, and even scored the opening goal in their surprising Nedbank Cup victory over AmaZulu in 2012/13 season at King Zwelithini Stadium. Though their journey ended in the round of 16 by Maritzburg United at Umthatha Stadium and Sechaba yet again scored, his experience provides valuable perspective.
“Having played the game myself definitely helps,” Sechaba explained, highlighting the advantage of his own football background. “His mother was also a player, and football was practically the only language spoken at home.”
While his mother played at a local level, their shared passion for the sport undoubtedly influenced Mofokokeng’s path.
Mofokeng’s success may seem sudden to some, but Sechaba reveals he always expected his son to flourish. “I was anticipating it,” he shared. “Even though his rise happened quite quickly, I knew he had the potential. Life is unpredictable, and my current prayer is that nothing hinders his progress. I hope to be around to witness him reach his full potential by the age of 28.”
