Stellenbosch Reaches Confed Cup Group Stages
Stellenbosch FC’s impressive form continued as they secured their place in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages.
Despite a 1-1 draw against AS Vita Club at Stade des Martyrs de la Pentecôte in Kinshasa on Sunday in the Confederation Cup second preliminary round, their 3-1 aggregate victory ensured their progression.
Lehlohonolo Mojela scored for Stellenbosch in the 71st minute, but the team played the entire second half with a man down after Ismail Toure was sent off. Despite conceding a late penalty, Vita Club couldn’t mount a comeback.
Stellenbosch joins Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns as South African representatives in CAF club competitions this season. Pirates and Sundowns will compete in the Champions League group stages.
The draw for the group stages of all CAF club competitions will be held on 7 October. Before then, Pirates or Stellenbosch will have won their first trophy of the season in the MTN8 final that will take place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on 5 October.
