Title Race Heat Up: Sesipi Strike Fires Pirates Closer To Historic Diski Glory

Orlando Pirates maintained their charge toward a maiden DStv Diski Challenge title with a gritty 1-0 victory over Richards Bay at Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday morning.

The Buccaneers approached the encounter determined to open up a six-point gap at the top of the table ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns, as they chase what would be their first-ever Diski Challenge title.

Following the win, Pirates have now accumulated 63 points from 26 matches. Sundowns remain in second place on 57 points, although the Brazilians still have a game in hand, having played 25 matches. Their 25th fixture took place on Saturday, where they secured a victory against Stellenbosch.

The decisive moment in the match came in the first half when Thuto Sesipi found the back of the net, scoring what proved to be the only goal of the game. Pirates then showed resilience and discipline to protect their lead for the remainder of the match until the final whistle.

The Buccaneers will be back in action next Saturday when they take on another KwaZulu-Natal-based side, AmaZulu, at UJ Soweto Stadium. Pirates will be aiming to collect another crucial three points as they edge closer to the title.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Chippa United and Polokwane City played out a 1-1 draw at Gelvandale Stadium, while Sekhukhune United and AmaZulu kicked off their midday encounter at Isak Steyl Stadium.
