September Provides Update On His Future

Chippa United coach Thabo September has given an update on his future at the club, with his contract at the Gqeberha-based outfit set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

The Western Cape-born mentor was initially roped in as a co-coach alongside Kwanele Kopo but assumed sole responsibility in charge of affairs in December last year following the shock exit of the ex-Pretoria Callies coach.

Under his tutelage, the Chilli Boys have won four matches in the league and stretched their winless run in the Betway Premiership to five games after suffering a 3-0 defeat at the hands of defending champions and runaway log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns in the capital on Wednesday evening.

As a result, Chippa saw their hopes of an ambitious top-eight finish take a slight setback, with the club in eighth place with 30 points accumulated from 26 league outings.

September’s charges are level on points with both Kaizer Chiefs and Marumo Gallants in ninth and 10th place, respectively, while edging 11th-placed Richards Bay and 12th-placed Magesi by a single point.

While the club has created a gap between itself and the drop zone in a bid to stage a respectable season, the 42-year-old tactician is uncertain about his future at the trigger-happy Chippa Mpengesi-owned club, stating that talks have not yet begun over a possible new deal.

“No, we have not started having discussions, not yet. But my contract ends now at the end of the season, but I have a two-year option, so we will [discuss], but the signs of staying [are there]. So, we haven’t really sat and discussed the contract,” said September.

On their quest to seal MTN8 qualification for the upcoming campaign, September believes a top-eight spot is not out of reach with two games remaining, setting a target of overhauling four points amid fierce competition.

“We need to be as professional as we can to finish the season on a good note, so I’m looking forward to that. It is possible [to get top eight], we have two games, if we get four points out of the two games, then it is possible,” added the former SuperSport United midfield maestro.

Chippa will visit resurgent Gallants in their next encounter on Saturday, 17 May, before facing a daunting task of resisting rampant Sundowns from claiming the maximum points in their penultimate match on home soil.
