Chiefs Nearing Appointment Of Nabi

Kaizer Chiefs appear close to finalizing the appointment of Nasreddine Nabi as their head coach for next season, according to information received by Sportswire.

Nabi was nearly appointed by the Soweto giants at the beginning of the past season but couldn’t agree to terms. He desired to bring his own technical team, which ultimately led the deal to fall through.

Now, after a disappointing 10th-place finish under caretaker coach Cavin Johnson (their worst ever in the PSL era), desperation has seemingly gripped the Naturena-based club. They cannot afford another poor season next term.

However, Nabi is currently contracted with FAR Rabat until 2025. He joined them in July last year and narrowly missed out on winning the Botola league title on Friday night, losing to Raja Casablanca under coach Jozef Zinnbauer. It’s unclear whether Chiefs will need to buy him out of his contract or if he can terminate it himself.

Despite Rabat’s 2-0 victory over FUS Rabat, Raja’s 3-0 win against Mouloudia Oujda secured them the title. Winning the Botola title was ultimately out of FAR Rabat’s hands, as they relied on Raja losing or drawing. They finished second with 71 points, while Raja claimed the title with 72 points. Notably, Raja, with Fadlu Davids as assistant coach, finished the season undefeated.

Reports from Nabi’s native Tunisia suggest he will be the new coach at Chiefs next season. The Tunisian coach previously led Young Africans of Tanzania to the 2023 CAF Confederation Cup title.

At Chiefs, he will be joined by Khalil Ben Youssef, Ilyes Mzoughi, and a Tunisian physical trainer in his new mission.

While AS FAR’s season isn’t entirely over, they still have the Coupe du Trône semi-final against Maghreb Fez on 23 June. Following that, everything seems to point towards Chiefs, who are rumored to be offering him a three-year contract similar to the one offered to coach Gavin Hunt.

Chiefs also face the task of dealing with several expiring player contracts at the end of the month, including Itumeleng Khune, Edmilson Dove, Sifiso Hlanti, Siyethemba Sithebe, and Lehlogonolo Matlou. Njabulo Ngcobo’s contract also expires this month, but Sportswire has learned that he has signed a three-year deal with Sekhukhune United.
