Mofokeng Attracts Interest From Minnesota

An American club in the MLS has reportedly shown interest in Orlando Pirates’ star player, Relebohile Mofokeng.
According to reports from America, Minnesota United has tabled an offer of $2 million, which is equivalent to over R35 million at the current exchange rate.
Minnesota is the club of Bafana Bafana attacker Bongokuhle Hlongwane, who joined them in January 2022 from Maritzburg United. Hlongwane, who is contracted with the team until 2027, has scored 35 goals and provided 16 assists in 140 matches across all competitions.
Mofokeng’s Impressive Season
Mofokeng’s stellar performance last season has attracted this interest from the U.S. He had an outstanding season with the Pirates, scoring 12 goals and providing 15 assists in 49 matches. Notably, he scored two of those goals against league champions Mamelodi Sundowns in a match where the Soweto giants started with great momentum.
Accolades and Recognition
The 20-year-old’s impressive form led to him being shortlisted for several prestigious awards, including:
- PSL Footballer of the Season
- Betway Premiership Player’s Player of the Season
Both of these awards were won by Mamelodi Sundowns’ Lucas Ribeiro Costa. However, Mofokeng did not go home empty-handed. He won the PSL Young Player of the Season for the 2023/24 season and the MTN8 Last Man Standing award.
He also scored in the Pirates’ MTN8 final victory against Stellenbosch last October and in the CAF Champions League semi-final loss to Pyramids.
Earlier reports indicated that Dutch club PSV Eindhoven had made a R100 million offer for the young attacker, but that move has not yet materialized. It remains to be seen if Pirates will let go of their best player of late.
